SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:This calendar listing is intended to provide information about
the named cultural/religious observation and is not intended as an actua
l campus event. If a campus event is associated with this observance\, it
will be listed separately on the master calendar.\n\n\nTransgender Day o
f Remembrance (TDoR) is a day to memorialize those who have been killed a
s a result of transphobia\, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gend
er non-conforming people\, and acts to bring attention to the continued v
iolence endured by the transgender community.\n\n\nThe Transgender Day of
Remembrance was founded in 1998 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith\, a transgender g
raphic designer\, columnist\, and activist\, to memorialize the murder of
Rita Hester in Allston\, Massachusetts.\n\n\nSince its inception\, TDoR
has been held annually on November 20th\, and has slowly evolved from the
web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action.
In 2010\, TDoR was observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 co
untries.\n\n\nTypically\, a TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names
of those who lost their lives during the previous year and may include o
ther actions\, such as candlelight vigils\, art shows\, food drives\, fil
 m screenings\, marches\, among others.
