SUMMARY:Thanksgiving
DESCRIPTION:This calendar listing is intended to provide information about
the named cultural/religious observation and is not intended as an actua
l campus event. If a campus event is associated with this observance\, it
will be listed separately on the master calendar.\n\n\nMost stories of T
hanksgiving history start with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims an
d the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. Although th
ey did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest\, and the
local natives did participate\, this "first thanksgiving" was not a holid
ay\, simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of than
ks led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving can\
, however\, be traced back to 1863 when Pres. Lincoln became the first pr
esident to proclaim Thanksgiving Day. The holiday has been a fixture of l
 ate November ever since.
