SUMMARY:Smart Phones and Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Public Affairs Talks! is a series of one-hour presentations th
at will explore the year's public affairs theme through various topics. \
n\n\nThroughout history\, there are few inventions more ubiquitous than t
he smart phone in contemporary society. Roughly 75 percent of Americans a
nd 95 percent of college students now own a smart phone\, and those numbe
rs are only projected to rise in coming years. The consequences of this r
eality are far-reaching\, and several of these implications will be discu
ssed in this presentation: technology addiction\, impact on social relati
onships and an exploration of social media. In addition\, particular focu
s will be given to potential ways to move forward\, in light of the resea
rch findings\, as it relates to these various facets of smart phone use.
The responsible question then becomes how to utilize smart phones as a be
nefit rather than a detriment to mental health.\n\n\nPresenter \n\n\nShau
n Fossett is a mental health clinician at Missouri State University's Cou
nseling Center. \n\n\nView the Public Affairs Talks schedule.
