SUMMARY:Shattering the Silence: Mentoring Diverse Faculty and Students
DESCRIPTION:Luis Fernando Restrepo is a University Professor in the Depart
 ment of World Languages\, Literatures\, and Cultures at the University of
  Arkansas\, Fayetteville.  He is the director of the graduate program in 
 Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies and the Spanish Section Head.
   His teaching and research areas are colonial Latin American literature\
 , literature and human rights\, indigenous literatures and Latino educati
 on.  He chairs the UA committee os Scholars at Risk\, an international or
 ganization supporting threatened scholars and defending academic freedom.
   He is also the vice president of the Northwest Arkansas Hispanic Leader
 ship council.  Professor Restrepo has served as the assistant Vice Chance
 llor for Diversity and Community and was the founding director of La Ofic
 ina Latina\, and the founding president of the Latino Alumni society.  In
  2011 he established the Latino Youth Biiteracy Project\, a service learn
 ing initiative mentoring elementary and middle school Spanish heritage sp
 eakers.  He has also served in the Arksasas Commission on Closing the Aca
 demic Achievement Gap\, appointed by Governor Beebe.
