SUMMARY:What My Voice Says About Me
DESCRIPTION:Missouri State University invites you to attend the 17th annua
l Public Affairs Conference as a live virtual event Sept. 29-Oct. 1\, 202
0! This year's public affairs theme is The Power of Voice. \n\n\nLinks to
all live webinar events will be listed on the Public Affairs Conference
schedule website.\n\n\nPeople use multiple methods to communicate. All of
them are aspects of our daily lives\, our identities and our emotional w
ell-being. Our voices are all unique and reflect a multitude of factors:
where we were raised\, languages we were exposed to as children and langu
ages used by peers. Dialogue\, spoken or otherwise\, conveys a plethora o
f personal traits to listeners\, whether intended or not. Some communicat
ions are seen as more feminine or masculine\, while others reflect the re
gion of the country where one lives. These traits often cause the listene
r to form opinions or conclusions about the speaker before taking the tim
e to get to know the person. What phonetic and linguistic “habits” in spe
ech affect and convey information about us? Real or assumed\, how does vo
ice project information about gender\, sexuality\, disability\, ethnicity
or social status? How do social norms and expectations affect a person’s
true voice? Are digital technologies\, such as texting and social media\
, affecting voice identity and cultural diversity?
