SUMMARY:Even in Science\, Representation Matters
DESCRIPTION:Missouri State University invites you to attend the 17th annua
l Public Affairs Conference as a live virtual event Sept. 29-Oct. 1\, 202
0! This year's public affairs theme is The Power of Voice. \n\n\nLinks to
all live webinar events will be listed on the Public Affairs Conference
schedule website.\n\n\nThe realm of science is often seen as a paragon of
high-minded intellectualism\, without bias and operating by pure thought
and idealism. However\, scientists are people who have biases as well. W
hile promotional efforts have increased\, professionals representing gend
er\, racial and ethnic minorities continue to be severely underrepresente
d in STEM (science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics). Healthy a
dvancement in any field is best served through a diverse workforce. In ad
dressing this issue\, are public institutions and higher education lackin
g imagination\, or is it a lack of commitment? How can we aggressively ad
dress imbalance throughout the sciences? Who will give voice to eliminate
the compounding barriers to access\, role models and educational equity?
How can isolationism and bias be addressed for minorities entering the S
 TEM workforce?
