SUMMARY:Hidden Bias in Work Environments
DESCRIPTION:Missouri State University invites you to attend the 17th annua
l Public Affairs Conference as a live virtual event Sept. 29-Oct. 1\, 202
0! This year's public affairs theme is The Power of Voice. \n\n\nLinks to
all live webinar events will be listed on the Public Affairs Conference
schedule website.\n\n\nBusiness leaders need to start sweating the subtle
stuff. Subtle forms of discrimination\, though often overlooked\, may be
as detrimental as overt actions. According to the NeuroLeadership Instit
ute\, most people exhibit some form of unconscious affinity or other subt
le bias. These types of biases create negative work environments and redu
ce productivity. A study revealed that 66% of subjects reported that bias
ed treatment in the workplace had a large impact on their morale\, motiva
tion\, commitment and desire to advance in the organization. What kinds o
f verbal and nonverbal communications enable this type of discrimination?
How can active listening build trust among employees and resolve conflic
t? How might individuals learn to value opposing views without sacrificin
g their own? Are organizations devaluing diversity when fear of bias crea
 tes self-censoring?
