SUMMARY:The Power of Voice through Non-Verbal Expression
DESCRIPTION:Missouri State University invites you to attend the 17th annua
l Public Affairs Conference as a live virtual event Sept. 29-Oct. 1\, 202
0! This year's public affairs theme is The Power of Voice. \n\n\nLinks to
all live webinar events will be listed on the Public Affairs Conference
schedule website.\n\n\nIt’s not always what you say\, but how you physica
lly express what you feel\, that conveys what you are thinking. A great d
eal of a person’s communication lies in body language and nonverbal commu
nication. Sometimes cultural norms of body language in one culture are mi
sinterpreted as disinterest\, disrespect or an invasion of another’s pers
onal space. But in another culture\, those same physical stances are rega
rded as standards. Some languages are based solely on nonverbal expressio
 n. For example\, ASL (American Sign Language) is a complete\, unique lang
uage\, rich in visual-spatial expression. Increasingly\, new parents are
using signing gestures with their babies to help bridge communications. G
estures\, posture\, touch and eye contact all send strong messages. What
can we learn from ASL to help us become better communicators? How do your
expressions\, movements and nonverbal actions influence the way you are
seen and heard? How do people’s expressive natures communicate who they a
re as individuals\, as a group and as a culture? How can we mitigate bias
and discrimination resulting from the nonverbal voice?
