SUMMARY:Linguistics Colloquium Talk Dr. Andrea B. Hellman: Teacher perspec
tives on educating English learners during the pandemic
DESCRIPTION:When schools implemented emergency plans for instructing stude
nts during the pandemic emergency\, all groups of students were not impac
ted equally. The presenter reports on a study that explored teachers’ exp
eriences with how English learner families were served after schools clos
ed for face-to-face instruction in spring 2020.\n\n\nThe goal of the stud
y was to identify takeaways for creating instructional plans for emergenc
y situations that are suitable for English learners and make it feasible
for them to continue learning both grade-level content and language remot
ely. The findings indicated that a large segment of English learners lost
their access to schooling due to a lack of planning for their specific n
eeds. Participants will discuss a proposed action plan for recovering equ
ity in education for language minority students.\n\n\nJoin via Zoom.
