SUMMARY:Department of Mathematics Zoom Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Nodal Patterns Mysteries\n\n\nDr. Peter Kuchment\n\n\nTexas A
& M\n\n\nAbstract: Nodal patterns of oscillating membranes have been obse
rved since 16th century\, starting with Leonardo da Vinci\, Galileo Galil
ei\, Robert Hooke\, and many others afterwards. The tools for their rigor
ous study started being developed only in 20th century\, with the main ef
fort in the last quarter of the century. The problems\, however\, turned
out very hard and their study has significantly intensified in the curren
t century and attracts more and more attention nowadays.\n\n\nThe talk wi
ll survey these developments\, with main concentration on the issue of co
unting the nodal domains. No previous knowledge of the subject is assumed
