SUMMARY:Public Affairs Conference -- Science: Unite not alienate
DESCRIPTION:Live Zoom webinar panel session (see conference website for Zo
om link)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrust and collaboration between the public and the
scientific community are vital for reaping the benefits of modern science
and technology\, and for maintaining America’s global leadership in thes
e fields (Research America\, BIO International Convention). Yet\, a disco
nnect is evident between some citizens and scientists regarding the inter
pretation of scientific facts and research. This disconnect is evident du
ring the COVID-19 era as a growing number of Americans choose to disregar
d research-based recommendations from the medical community\, such as usi
ng face masks and being vaccinated. What factors contribute to the growin
g mistrust between the public and the scientific community? How does this
affect the ability to lead during times of crisis? To what extent does t
he lack of diversity within STEM fields factor into public distrust? What
can scientists and the media do to address the divide? What role might h
igher education play to bridge the gap?
