SUMMARY:Using Circles to Encourage Dialogue & Build Community: A Campus Co
nflict Deep Dive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Charlene Berquist and Ms. Heather Blades\n\n\
nThe “circle process” is a unique format for engaging with others. Most p
eople are used to listening to lectures\, attending meetings\, or taking
part in informal conversations. In contrast\, circle practice is a struct
ured form of intentional communication that allows participants an opport
unity to speak and listen in an atmosphere of safety\, equality\, and emp
athy that encourages sharing and connection. This format allows deep dial
ogue to take place and helps to build community and enhance and strengthe
n connections between those taking part in the circle.\n\n\nIn this inter
active online session we will do the following:\n\n\n\nExamine the histor
y and indigenous roots of circle practice.\nIdentify the roles\, responsi
bilities\, and tasks of a circle keeper/leader.\nLearn how to design and
lead effective circles by creating a safe environment where people can sh
are.\nConsider how circles may vary based upon the context in which they
are used (e.g.\, in person vs. online\, and in differing settings).\nExpl
ore how circles can be used in the classroom and within units\, departmen
ts\, and organizations to build relationships\, provide effective and col
laborative leadership\, and enhance learning.\nLearn experientially by ta
king part in a circle process.\n\nThis Deep Dive Workshop is free for Mis
souri State faculty and staff\, but seats are limited and pre-registratio
n is required. A Missouri State University email address is required for
registration.
