SUMMARY:GGP Seminar: A Geography Week presentation by MSU alumnus Joseph N
bida\, "Leading transformational change in developing countries"
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Geography\, Geology\, and Planning Department
for a special presentation by Joseph and Hannah Nbida\, representing the
Knights of Mercy. The Knights of Mercy is an organization building water
wells for villages in Cameroon\, Africa.\n\n\nJoseph Nbida received his B
achelor of Science degree from Missouri State University in research mark
eting\, his master's degree in non-profit and civic leadership at Drury U
 niversity\, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Carolina University\, N
orth Carolina.\n\n\nJoseph Nbida writes\, "Water is life. Clean water not
only improves the health of a community but\, as history has taught us\,
has been a catalyst to economic growth and development. The United State
s has thousands of nonprofits that make their mission to provide clean wa
ter in developing countries. However\, for most nonprofits\, water wells
are built\, and the community is no longer a focal point. The result\, wi
th that model\, is the failure of the water well or abandonment of the we
ll. Knights of Mercy is committed to a mentorship program with communitie
s in Cameroon that goes well beyond just water well placement. We mentor
leaders through our outreach program and train a development committee in
the community to ensure the water is used to increase agricultural growt
h\, and trade\, and commerce. Our theory is that change in developing wol
ds must start from the bottom\, up. We are currently engaged in a researc
h project in Cameroon to develop a blueprint that can be used around the
globe to create self-sustainable communities and reduce extreme poverty."
