SUMMARY:Spring 2022 Academic Advisor Forum Series: Advisors as Social Just
ice Advocates: A Primer
DESCRIPTION:Spring 2022 Academic Advisor Forum Series\n\n\nPlease make pla
ns to attend Academic Advisor forums this semester. All sessions count to
ward the three hours needed for annual renewal of the Master Advisor desi
gnation. The forums are available to the advising community\, so please e
ncourage colleagues to participate.\n\n\nRegistration is available.\n\n\n
Advisors as Social Justice Advocates: A Primer\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Kyler
Sherman-Wilkins\, assistant professor\, Department of Sociology & Anthrop
ology\n\n\nFor many of our students\, and for students from historically
excluded groups\, it has become increasingly difficult for them to "just
be a student." Whether struggling to nourish their bodies with food\, bal
ancing work and school\, withstanding racial microaggressions\, or worryi
ng about basic rights being stripped away\, students at Missouri State ha
ve a lot on their plate as they attempt to navigate the curriculum. To ad
vise today's students\, we must reimagine academic advising as more than
merely helping students select courses and identify particular career pat
hs. Indeed\, advisors today must be advocates who are willing and able to
identify and eradicate oppressive\, structural barriers that keep far to
o many our students from succeeding. In this forum\, Dr. Kyler Sherman-W
ilkins will provide an overview on how to adopt an advocacy approach\, ro
oted in social justice\, to better serve our students both while at the u
niversity\, and beyond. \n\n\nJoin via Zoom.\n\n\nRegistration is encoura
ged.
