SUMMARY:Self-searching for Cultural Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Collaboration is key to solving numerous social and cultural p
roblems\, and excellent communication is key to effective collaboration.
Excellent communication is developed from awareness of one’s own cultural
ideology and understanding of internal biases or fears. How can one begi
n this journey of self-discovery? Qualitative researchers are beginning t
o explore the significant role of this “reflexivity” in their encounters
with culturally diverse communities. As ethical citizens\, with awareness
of our own belief systems - through education\, experiences\, and expect
ations - we should endeavor to work authentically with other populations.
What reflexive strategies can help us be more aware of ourselves and col
laborate effectively with others? What role can the arts\, language\, hum
anities\, education\, and other disciplines play in helping to develop th
ese processes of self-discovery\, interpretation\, analysis\, and connect
 ion?
