SUMMARY:Protecting the Mental Health of America’s Youth
DESCRIPTION:Today’s generation of young people is experiencing more report
ed mental health issues than ever.  According to the Department of Health
and Human Services\, the prevalence of depression among people under 17
has nearly doubled in the past decade\, and the National Institute of Men
tal Health reports that nearly one in three adolescents will experience a
n anxiety disorder.  How have movements to reconsider conditions like aut
ism and ADHD as examples of neurodiversity\, rather than disease or disor
der\, further complicate our understanding of young minds? How can the co
mmunity help our youth better respond to issues of information overload a
nd a 24/7 bombardment of negativity via online and other sources?  In wha
t ways can the barriers of stigma\, lack of services\, and distrust of me
ntal health workers be addressed?  How can areas such as medicine\, psych
ology\, and education work collectively with families and community servi
ces to enable our youth to live their most fulfilling lives?
