SUMMARY:Public Affairs Conference 2023 - Cultivating Genuinely Safe Learni
 ng Spaces
DESCRIPTION:School safety is a key factor in student success\, but with ev
ery shooting\, every suicide and every instance of vicious bullying\, it
can seem like we’re getting further from the ideal of safe schools. Are p
hysical controls\, such as metal detectors\, limited access\, security ca
meras\, school officers\, clear backpacks and dress codes enough\, or can
students’ physical safety be improved with attention to the cultures wit
hin and surrounding schools? What obstacles stand in the way of fostering
social and emotional learning\, cultural literacy and adolescent mental
health in our K-12 and higher education environments? How could local\, s
tate and federal governmental entities communicate and collaborate to cul
tivate learning environments that are both physically safe and emotionall
 y secure?
