SUMMARY:Academic Advisor Forum: Motivational Advising: Utilizing Motivatio
nal Interviewing in Academic Advising
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Justin Johns\, Associate Director-Academic Advising
& Transfer Center\n\n\nAs advisors\, we often meet with students who con
tinuously engage in behaviors that are incongruent with their goals for a
cademic success. Advisors may offer advice\, only for the student to late
r return to our office engaging in the same problematic behaviors previou
sly discussed (i.e.\, missing classes\, employing poor study habits\, poo
r time management). “MI seeks to enhance students’ motivations and guide
them toward changing specific problem behaviors (W. R. Miller & Rollnick\
, 2002\, 2009).” This forum will introduce Motivational Interviewing as a
communication tool advisors can use to assist students in changing probl
ematic behaviors.
