LOCATION:Plaster Student Union\, Robert W. Ballroom East
SUMMARY:Public Affairs Conference - On mental health
DESCRIPTION:According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness\, 6.9% of
adults in the U.S. (16 million people) had at least one major depressive
episode in the past year. The National Center for Health Statistics repo
rts that suicide rates have increased nearly 25% over the last 15 years.
What accounts for these alarming figures? What public policies are necess
ary to address this crisis? What are best practices for promoting mental
health\, and how may mental disorders be better identified and destigmati
zed? What role should community institutions — government\, not-for-profi
ts and private commercial sector — play in suicide prevention and in prom
oting mental health? How may individual community members be equipped to
recognize and report concerns about mental health issues in their homes\,
  classrooms and work places?
