SUMMARY:Public Affairs Conference - Religious liberty and the culture war:
  Conflict or accommodation?
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty has long allowed individuals and groups to l
ive according to the dictates of their consciences. With this liberty\, f
aith communities make important contributions to civil society\, particul
arly in the founding and sustaining of countless hospitals\, schools and
universities\, and social service organizations. As mores and values chan
ge\, religious liberty conflicts increasingly involve such issues as abor
tion\, gay rights and soon\, transgender rights. Is it possible to protec
t the rights of all without harming the common good? Or must there be cle
ar winners and losers? What is the best conceptual framework for analyzin
 g these issues?
