SUMMARY:CANCELLED - CNAS Seminar: Graduate education in the Biomedical Sci
 ences: opportunities\, preparation and training
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Michael Grotewiel received his Ph.D. from Vanderb
ilt University after earning his B.A. from the University of Missouri-Col
umbia. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medic
ine. Dr. Grotewiel received the NIH Research Career Development Award fro
m 2001 to 2006 and the Outstanding Departmental Teaching Award in Health
Sciences Education in 2007.\n\n\nHe is a member of the Genetics Society o
f America and the Research Society on Alcoholism. His laboratory uses the
fruit fly to explore the molecular-genetic basis for behavior and diseas
 e. As a member of the VCU Alcohol Research Center\, Dr. Grotewiel is prin
cipally interested in genes that influence ethanol (alcohol) intoxication
in flies and how the human counterparts of these genes contribute to alc
ohol use disorder. Additionally\, his laboratory is developing the fly as
a model for identifying genes involved in mitochondrial disease/oxidativ
e stress and for human diseases such as Wolfram syndrome.
