SUMMARY:Bears in the Know Luncheon Series - What an Inorganic Chemist Can
 Do in Biomedical Field?
DESCRIPTION:A series of new light insensitive\, water insoluble\, thermall
y stable and yet antimicrobial silver-based compounds was discovered and
investigated in the Department of Chemistry at MSU within the last decade
. These compounds were studied against several notorious human pathogens
and to suppress biofilms formation on a solid surface. Another group of n
ew highly potent cytotoxic compounds of platinum and palladium was first
obtained in Dr. Nick Gerasimchuk's research laboratory in 2003. These sub
stances are active in vitro against two human cancer lines at the level o
f conventional anticancer drug cisplatin. During the last four years\, th
e lab discovered an intense fluorescence of these compounds in the near-i
nfrared region of spectra where our tissue is transparent. Therefore\, a
new generation of unique biologically active compounds for theranostics a
pplications was developed at MSU.\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Nick Gerasimchuk\,
professor of chemistryThe luncheon will be held in the Turner Family Hosp
itality Room on the first floor of the Kenneth E. Meyer Alumni Center. Co
mplimentary parking is available in the attached garage off of McDaniel S
treet. Feel free to arrive any time after 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served
at approximately 11:30 a.m.\, followed by the program at noon. The Misso
uri State University Foundation is excited to host the Bears in the Know
Luncheon Series. Thank you to Arvest\, our presenting sponsor.
