SUMMARY:Respectability Politics in Social Activism
DESCRIPTION:Smile. Talk calmly. Educate and have compassion. So much of th
e advice for young activists is about how to appeal and be accepted by in
dividuals with privileged identities. However\, we rarely have conversati
ons with privileged individuals about what it means when they demand cert
ain attitudes as a condition of engaging in anti-oppression work. Join th
is event to learn more about respectability politics\, how to engage emot
ion in activism\, and where we can collectively continue our own self-wor
 k. Co-sponsored by the Missouri State Collegiate Chapter of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
