SUMMARY:Public Affairs Conference - Is traditional higher education sustai
 nable?
DESCRIPTION:Panel Session\n\n\nHistorically\, the dominant model of higher
education has been to house and feed students\,  sell them books and cou
rsework\, provide entertainment via sport and social events\, advise them
and graduate them. More recently\, increasing operating costs and declin
ing state and federal support have resulted in higher student costs. Stud
ent macro-trends indicate a demand for an instant start and a la carte co
urse offerings and certifications. General education is regarded as exces
s baggage. Given rising costs\, new technologies\, and the suddenly diffe
rent demands of contemporary clientele\, how long can the old model conti
nue? What changes – for better or worse – are likely?\n\n\nPublic Affairs
